Carpe Diem – Joker Out review: As if there was no tomorrow

It is all about being focused on the present. The most streamed Slovenian band of 2022, and now the representatives of their homeland in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, Joker Out underlines most worries have no branch to cling to in this tree called the future. Their entry Carpe Diem is their way to celebrate the day, as the Latin phrase in the title defines it so.

Formed in 2016 by a group of childhood friends and schoolmates, Joker Out projects the musicians’ perception of alternative rock, teemed with brit pop elements that influential bands like Suede, Blur, and Oasis have brought to the scene. Bojan Cvjetićanin leads the vocals with his charisma at capacity, while Jan Peteh and Kris Guštin hit the guitars, Jure Maček drums, and the latest member of the quintet, Nace Jordan, takes on the bass. After making their debut with Umazane misli in 2021, the time has come for Joker Out to show their talents internationally on the biggest stage of the continent, which will be set in Liverpool, United Kingdom, this May.

Both in the beginning and the choruses of Carpe Diem band repeats “Mi bomo cell noč plesali, ljubili se in se igrali, kot da nas jutri več ne bo / We’ll be dancing all night long, we’ll love each other and play, as if there was no tomorrow” 1 showcasing their point of view on life, one to be chill about, one should make them breathe a little. Combining the positive, full-of-life themes of the song with the rock they execute, Joker Out’s message manages to land successfully. They also capsulate the feeling of being alive instrumentally, having the powerful guitar riffs and drum beats effectively in action. On the circle they positioned themselves, the band tends to create an atmosphere that the song necessarily requires.

Performing Carpe Diem for the first time in a concert-like show on the national television of Slovenia, Joker Out has already proved how they are going to fill the stage, and it turns out that they know what they are capable of. Throughout the performance, each member dances with the camera, just the way they want to do in life, reflecting the mood of the song once again with the figures they make and the smiles they put along.
