I’ve followed the instructions in the Joomla documentation (https://docs.joomla.org/Custom_error_pages) to customize the error pages.
How can I get this page to be shown in the site itself, so the visitor can get direct access to the Menu, etc.?

You could somewhat incorporate your site design into your error page – create a new article page with (for example your site’s header/banner, but without text content, view the page, and then from your browser File > Save Page as…. and save it as a static HTML page. Then edit this static page and add in the error page PHP code. You can also add modules according to https://docs.joomla.org/Custom_error_pages, just copy in the provided code, and then change the example module names/position names to your site’s positions and modules.
Ideally the visitor shouldn’t see ANY errors on your site
